As you figure out healthy eating, you'll no doubt want to try out some of the different trademarked Diets you come across. This curiosity is a great thing that will help you better understand how different foods and different macro ratios affect your body.
While fun and great for teaching new recipes, there are dangers out there. Mainly from different levels of malnutrition, here are the warning signs that underline when a Diet is more harmful than helpful.
If it has the word "cleanse", turn away immediately. Your liver and kidneys are already doing their jobs just fine.
Cleanses typically involve some sort of drinkable concoction that you stick to for a set period of time. For instance, The Master Cleanse lasts 10 days and involves a lemon drink and laxative tea. The problem with this is that it deprives you of nutrients, protein and calories. Sure, you'll lose weight but not in a sustainable way.
Your diet should be fulfilling.
Health comes with moderation and balance. Too much of anything leads to negative consequences. The same is also true of too little. Be extremely wary of those diets that require an all or nothing approach. The Keto Diet, for instance, is basically all about slashing carbs to virtually 0g. Though there's really no consensus in the scientific community as to whether it's a good diet or not, there is a study that found it's not as good as restricted but balanced macro diet.
If you do try out one of these extremes, do a lot of research beforehand to make sure you won't cause any serious harm to yourself. This way, if you decide to go vegetarian, for example, you'll know to be ready with vitamin B supplementation to make up for what you'll be missing now that meat is cut.
There's no way any diet can promise you'll hit specific numbers. They know nothing about your physiology. They know nothing about your current caloric count. They know nothing about your current activity level. These diets are just shots in the dark, no doubt written by some underpaid writer with a passing fancy in health.
Too Many Rules
If their regime lays out a daily schedule for weeks when there's a full moon followed by special recipes for when Jupiter enters the house of Mars, it's not worth the effort unless you're the kind of person that needs a plan drawn out for you.
Your diet shouldn't be overly complex. It should be basic and easy to put into practice.
No, the acai berry is not going to grant you superhuman longevity, and, no, drinking aloe vera will not make you immune to everything. Any diet that centers on some overpriced "miracle food" is just trying to turn a profit. I guarantee it was written up by that fruit's marketing team to increase sales. Locally grown berries are just as amazing for you as those grown in equatorial Brazil.
Your diet should not break the bank.
A Note on Diets
All of the bodybuilding greats got to where they are without many of the current Diets. If they could obtain their physiques without them, you can too.
